Sažetak
The association Eleocharitetum palustris is recorded in this work for the first time in Croatia. It has been established in two localities on the island of Pag (2004), in one locality close to Vransko Lake near Pakoštane (2004), in three localities in the Krapina river valley (2006), and in three localities from the literature (Hulina 1971, Vodvarka 1990, Barišić 1999) in which the relevés were identified as the wrong associations in spite of the dominance of Eleocharis palustris. Field research was carried out using the standard Braun-Blanquet method. The association is characterized by its dominant species, Eleocharis palustris, and by its poor floristic composition. It develops alongside the banks of freshwater marshes and in shallow depressions within pastures and meadows. The stands are exposed to occasional flooding, grazing, mowing and trampling. The species Eleocharis palustris is a perennial that spreads with stolons, because of which the association is very successful in colonising bare patches in the vegetation cover. Syntaxonomically, the association Eleocharitetum palustris is assigned to the Magnocaricion elatae alliance, to the Phragmitetalia order and to the Phragmiti-Magnocaricetea class. But it has to be pointed out that the association is still not sufficiently investigated and its affiliation to the higher syntaxonomical categories is not quite clear. Stands with Eleocharis palustris very often build transitions towards the Agrostietea stoloniferae class. The association occupies mostly small areas. For the preservation of this kind of vegetation, it is necessary to maintain the aquatic regime on the habitat and the traditional extensive form of grazing and mowing.
