Sažetak
The incidence of IDDM in children 0-14 years old was determined for the population of Zagreb, Croatia, in the 1970-1987 period. The primary source of data was the existing diabetes registry and medical files of the three diabetologic institutions in Zagreb. Two additional independent sources were used to estimate underascertainment of the primary source. The annual ascertainment was 94%-100%. The annual age-adjusted incidence rate ranged from 1.1 to 8.8 per 100, 000 population. There was a significant dip in IDDM incidence in 1987. The incidence peaked at age 6-7 years and in puberty, being heighest in females aged 10-14 years. No significant correlation was found between the incidence of IDDM and the incidence of measles, mumps, rubella and chicken pox. A significant but weak correlation was found between the incidence of IDDM and viral meningitis, with a 2-year lag. The data suggest an important role of enteroviruses in the etiology of IDDM. However, the difference between IDDM epidemiology in Croatia and its neighboring countries is more easily explicable in terms of lifestyle differences.
