Sažetak
Chronic non-communicable diseases pose the biggest burden in mortality, morbidity and health care cost in the modern world. They account for more than ľ of total mortality. In this framework of chronic non-communicable diseases, more than a half of all deaths are caused by atherosclerosis. Cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors have not been systematically investigated in Croatia, and the existing data are dispersed. In this sutdy, primary, secondary and tertiary documentation sources on the issue in Croatia were searched and compared to data on Europe and USA. Changes in the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors in Croatia were found to be comparable to those observed in Central and Eastern Europe, and they failed to show improvement recorded in Western Countries over almost 30 years now. With the increase in the population life expectancy, care about chronic non-communicable diseases and atherosclerosis above all, is becoming ever more important. There is a considerable potential to further reduce cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality by primary prevention activities, including both proper population strategy and high-risk individuals strategy on the one hand, and by large-scale implementation of secondary prevention on the other hand.
