Sažetak
The study included 6, 750 Croatians referred during the 1990-1996 period to the Vuk Vrhovac University Clinic in Zagreb for evaluation of diabetes. Anthropometric and metabolic variables of diabetic patients and individuals with other categories of glucose intolerance according to ADA 1997, WHO 1980-1985, and both criteria were compared. Although 1, 475 and 1, 034 individuals were diagnosed as having diabetes according to the new and old criteria, respectively, only 784 persons met both sets of criteria. Diabetic patients identified by the new criteria were significantly younger and more obese, and had severe hyperglycemia and unfavorable lipid profile. There were 406 subjects with impaired fasting glycemia according to the new criteria, 411 subjects with impaired glucose tolerance according to the old criteria, however, only 175 subjects met both sets of criteria. The former group were younger, leaner, and had lower HbA1c than the latter. The concordance between the new and old criteria was found to be disturbingly low, as the two strategies actually identified different diabetic populations.
