Sažetak
The paper presents test results of several case studies of coupled meso/microscale numerical models in complex terrain. The improved coupling strategy was applied in order to achieve higher prediction accuracy, compared to some previous attempts. All modelling results are compared to measured data obtained from several surface measurements in Croatia. Wind resource assessment in Croatia is a subject of continuous investigation due to complex wind regime and highly complex terrain in large (and the windiest) part of the country. Surface and upper-air wind data are scarce, although some improvement can be expected in future. In the meantime, pressure of the wind power industry backed by the newly adopted legal framework for wind energy use in Croatia gave the wind resource assessment high priority. One approach that authors believe can improve understanding of wind resource and derive high resolution spatial wind recourses maps is a coupling of wind flow numerical models of different scales. In an attempt to find a reliable modelling approach that would increase wind resource prediction accuracy, the authors have tested a coupling between state-of-the-art mesoscale NWP model used for operational weather forecasting (ALADIN/HR) and microscale WAsP model to resolve local flow features. The WAsP was chosen as standard microscale model used in wind power industry, despite its limited capacity to simulate wind flow in complex terrain. Testing and verification of the modelling system was performed during one year for several surface measurement stations in highly complex terrain of Croatian hinterland. As a first step, a 3-houly output of the mesoscale model ALADIN/HR at 8 km horizontal resolution has been interpolated to the location of measurement stations using bilinear interpolation from the 4 closest grid points. Calculated model wind climate at measuring stations was compared to the measured wind climate to assess the quality of the mesoscale model output. As the next step, the furthest and the closest out of 4 surrounding model grid points were selected for each measurement station analysed. Then, for selected grid points ALADIN/HR model data was derived and horizontally extrapolated by WAsP to the locations of measurement stations. Wind climates derived by the use of ALADIN/WAsP systems were compared with the measured wind climate throughout the analysed period. All the aforementioned methods for obtaining modelled wind climate at measurement stations were compared, indicating the robustness of the applied modelling system in complex terrain.
