Sažetak
Kosovo is an example of unsolved and opposing claims for self-determination that can bring to bloody armed conflicts, severe war devastation resulting in genocide and/or ethnic cleansing, to numerous human victims, exile and suffering, irreparable material damage and other negative side-effects. Both people Serbs and Kosovo Albanians want full sovereignty over Kosovo and accordingly, their claims exclude one another. Nowadays, Kosovo Albanians are gradually establishing independent government within the UNMIK monitoring. They are going through the phase of establishing a separate ethic identity from Albanians in Albania due to different political, economic, cultural, social and other reasons, including different historical experience since 1918. The decision on the future status of Kosovo is crucial for the European security, the proof of which are previous armed conflicts and violence that happened on the territory of the former Yugoslavia. Kosovo can benefit from secession in a political way, but secession and state establishment constitute a complex process in this sensitive case. There is significant fear among states that indulging one secessionist movement could initiate further secession claims in other multiethnic states. Regardless all the socio-political obstacles, Kosovo is nowadays on the road to independence.
