Sažetak
The island of Korčula is one of the largest islands along the Adriatic coast with an area of 276 km2. It represents a part of the Outer Dinarides whose structures are characterized by inverse and thrust relations. They are the consequence of gradual movements of the Adriatic microplate and of the Earth’ s crust deformation in the narrow zone of the European plate. The area between Šibenik and Prevlaka, which includes the island of Korčula, is directly influenced by the NNW movement of the southern part of the Adriatic microplate (Aljinović, 1987). The major fault which defines the main structural units of the area is the fault of Korčula which stretches from the island of Vis and Pelješac peninsula. It is a reverse fault with the inclination of 50-60 . This fault zone is about 2 km wide (Prelogović, 2001). The coasts of the island of Korčula are mainly formed in Cretaceous limestone. The inclination of the limestone beds is generally important, often more than 30°. Concerning the coastal geomorphology the steep rocky coast dominates. At the southeast part of the island there are high structural escarpments like for example between the Ripna and Pupnatska luka bay. The strong structural impact can be observed on the whole island as well as under the sea. The northern side of the shore is strait while the southern one is more indented. On the island of Korčula 7 locations have been investigated, all in cretaceous limestone: two on the northern shore and five on the southern. On the two northern locations the notch haven't been identified. While on the four, from five, southern locations we find the submerged notch at about -0, 4 m below middle sea level. Thus, the notch at the Island of Korčula is not widespread like for example on the Kvarner area in the northern Adriatic. The found notch are also much smaller comparing to those at the northern Adriatic what is in accordance with local tides. Biological zones are quite well visible and were useful in the determination of the BMSL and MSL. The developed recent notch hasn't been observed on the island. The notches at the island of Korčula are situated along the faults and are only locally distributed therefore, we think that the distribution of the submerged notches along the coast surely discern the tectonic influences in the area.
