Sažetak
In the paper the basic principles of the GMDS system are presented. Particularly, the principles, determining the mode of overall application and possibilities and limitations of particular subsystems in closed and/or archipelagic seas, such as the Adriatic Sea, are emphasised and analysed.
Beside basic principles, the present status of the GMDS system in the world and on the Adriatic Sea is shown in the paper. Also, considerations regarding influence of the GMDSS implementation on the general level of safety of navigation and environmental protection are presented. Also considered is the influence of GMDSS on existing and target level of safety of navigation of coastal vessels, recreational boats and yachts, as well as the possibilities of commercial use of the GMDSS communication hardware.
