Sažetak
Thyrotoxicosis, a life-threatening condition characterized by an excess of thyroid hormones with typical clinical manifestations and high mortality, is a well-known amiodarone side effect. Amiodarone is a highly effective antiarrhythmic drug that contains 37% iodine by weight and has a structural resemblance to thyroid hormones. The average prevalence of amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis is about 5%. Because of long terminal half-life amiodarone-induced thyroid dysfunction is very difficult to treat by discontinuation of amiodarone and antithyroid drugs.4, 9-11 Plasmapheresis is already known as a very effective therapeutic method for patients with thyrotoxicosis.12 Here we report on a patient with thyrotoxicosis who was successfully treated with plasmapheresis.
