Sažetak
The crucial moment for the transformation of a fishermen and sailors village into a seaside health resort, was the "discovery" of Opatija in the late 1830s by Iginio Scarpa, a rich and influential merchant from Rijeka, who arrived to Opatija following the then new coastal road. Scarpa, amazed by vegetation and peace, bought a terrain and constructed a villa (or reconstructed an existing building), called Angiolina after Scarpa's deceased wife.
