Sažetak
The study was conducted to evaluate the impact of bacterial growth on granulocyte activation in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). A group of 19 patients with CRS was enrolled after informed consent and Ethics committee approval. Patients with nasal polyps and asthma were excluded. Following inferior maxillary anstrostomy, bacteriological swabs and sinus lavage with 5 ccm of saline were taken. Eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were determined in lavages. Aerobic and anaerobic bacterial examination revealed 13 sterile, in 20 samples (16 patients), where pathogens were detected, 10 bacterial strains were isolated, 7 aerobic, and 3 anaerobic. ECP and MPO levels were not significantly different between infected and non-infected samples. It is concluded that bacterial growth is present in most of chronically inflamed sinuses but its impact on granulocyte activation is not confirmed, as granulocyte activation is also present in the sinuses where bacteria are not detected.
