Sažetak
The paper relates to application of low formaldehyde flame retardant (FR) agents. Widely used melamine formaldehyde (MF) binding agent is successfully replaced with environment friendly citric acid (CA). This alternative agent has been used until now for improvement of DP finishing and dimensional stability while in this paper it is used to bond organophosphorus oligomer to cotton and impart durable FR properties. In previous research CA has been used with Sodium hypophosphite (SHP) catalyst, while this paper tends to replace it with Sodium pyrophosphate (SP). The influence of different catalysts on binding agent’ s effectiveness was determined by the vertical flammability, tensile strength retention and wrinkle resistance. It was determined that CA is equally effective for crosslinking of FR with cotton cellulose as MF. In a case when SHP catalyst was substituted with SP catalyst results of FR effectiveness are in the same range measured on unwashed fabrics. FR performance measured at samples treated with Na-pyrophosphate has shown noticeable decrease after 1 and particularly after 5 washing cycles.
