Sažetak
The statistics of tourism business demonstrates that the tourism industry in most countries is dominated by the small and medium-sized enterprises. Owing to the nature of tourism industry which provides its guests with services, the size of tourism enterprises is often seen as an element which directly influences the quality of services provided and thus the overall success of the company. Namely, it is generally accepted that the small tourism firms are capable of providing their customers with personalized, differentiated, individualized service i.e. providing them with higher quality which results in guest's loyalty, repeated visits and in better business performance. On the other hand, SMEs (in tourism and generally) encounter specific business problems: limited financial sources, limited growth options, inadequate marketing and management practices, inability to negotiate bulk orders, under skilled labour etc. In other words, they are deprived of advantages resulting from largeness i.e. being small is their greatest advantage but also their greatest weakness. That is the reason why cooperative strategies are often seen as a tool that can help them overcome this problem. The empirical part of the paper concentrates upon small hotels in Croatia and their attitude and involvement in collaborative arrangements.
