Sažetak
INTRODUCTION: Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is important mode of renal replacement therapy in patients reaching end-stage renal disease. Peritoneal-dialysis-related peritonitis is the most frequent cause of morbidity and is among the leading causes of technique failure. The aim of the study was to demonstrate seasonal differences of peritonitis incidence. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We investigated 115 cases of peritoneal-dialysis-related peritonitis on 112 out hospital patients of Dispensary for peritoneal dialysis of the Internal clinic of University Hospital Split, Croatia in period from 1999 to 2006, treated with CAPD. RESULTS: Annual distribution of peritonitis cases is demonstrated on Table 1. Distribution of peritonitis cases among months is demonstrated on Table 2. When the data were grouped into two groups: mild season (from April to October) and cold season (from November to March), we demonstrated 75 (65, 2%) peritonitis episodes in mild season, and 40 (34, 8%) in cold season. We could not demonstrate significant differences in dialysate leukocyte number between mild and cold season (2, 37± 2, 47 vs. 3, 64± 4, 29 leukocyte /mL, p=0, 544). CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrated the importance of seasonal factors on the incidence of peritoneal-dialysis-related peritonitis. Patients treated with CAPD in Mediterranean climate in Croatia must be specially observed on peritoneal-dialysis-related peritonitis in mild season of year (from April to October). We also demonstrated significant variation of annual peritonitis incidence, and further investigation should be undertaken in different climates.
