N most sports, contact sports in particular, there is a risk of orofacial and stomatognatic system injuries. It is possible to prevent stomatognatic system injuries or reduce their consequences and therefore it is important to look into the possibilities of their prevention. Boxing is a contact sport running an extremely high risk of a stomatognatic system and facial trauma.The aim of the research was to record, examine, warn and educate the subjects about the protection against injuries of stomatognatic system and raise their awareness of the possible gravity of stomatognatic injuries. We tried to create the effective mouthguard and to examine, using objective clinical methods, the diversity of the existing mouthguards taking into consideration a series of parameters affecting their use.n most sports, contact sports in particular, there is a risk of orofacial and stomatognatic system injuries. We tried to create the effective mouthguard and to examine, using objective clinical methods, the diversity of the existing mouthguards taking into consideration a series of parameters affecting their use.he individual multiple layered laminated mouthguards showed a number of advantages over boil & bite mouthguards such as, low incidence of stomatognatic and facial injuries, wearing comfort, unhindered speaking, swallowing and breathing (p< 0.05). The stomatognatic injury provokes long-lasting consequences and therefore prevention is one of the basic requirements of dental, health care in contact sports. The study of the Croatian boxing team showed that nine out of ten boxers have problems with maxillary arch due to wearing inadequate, commercial mouthguards and thus their chewing apparatus does not function properly. During the entire dental examination, the mentioned athletes had the average of four teeth afflicted by caries and in some of them there was a need for prothetical sanation of oral cavity. Our research clearly demonstrated that the awareness of athletes and coaches, dentists and physicians about the role of protective appliances in sport is insufficient. The multiple layered laminated mouthguard provides a good protection in contact sports that is substantiated by the results of this experimental research on the Croatian boxing team.
