Sažetak
On the basis of the theoretical cognisance of free time and active rest in tourism certain conclusions can be drawn. The constant increase of the number of hours allocated to free time makes it the subject of research of certain scientific disciplines such as sociology, economics, etc. The emphasis of research lies on the quality use of free time that takes place in the domain of leisure, as the productive component of free time. Numerous activities are at one’ s disposal for active rest, both in one’ s place of residence and outside it, for example, leisure-time-sport-related, culture-related, art-related, entertainment-related activities, etc. It is the recreational-sport-related activities that significantly contribute to the quality of people’ s lives, particularly during the time spent on rest in tourism. Apart from their humanistic values, these activities also have a certain economic effect in the development of tourism as well as in other industries. This is evidenced by certain economic indicators, as published for some developed countries, presented in this chapter. Free time, active rest and tourism are interrelated phenomena because free time offers the opportunity for the development of numerous activities in tourism on the one hand, and on the other, tourism is, at the same time, both the part of the contents of free time and its qualitative component.
