Sažetak
Although conventional neuroleptics have shown effects in reducing symptomatology in schizorhrenic patients, they demonstrate minimal beneficial effects on cognitive functioning, or can even further impair cognitive function. Olanzapine is a novel antipsychotic agent for the treatment of psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia, and shows greater improvement in general psychiatric state and diminshment of positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. 18 schizophrenic patients, 12 males and 6 females, age ranged from 25 to 61 years were included in the study. Neuropsychological tests were Stroop Neuropsychological Screening Test and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. Cognitive measures based on SNST were number of words, and number of errors, and for WCST we used number of trials administered, total number correct, percent of errors, percent of perseverative responses, percent of perseverative errors, percent of nonperseverative errors and percent of conceptual level responses. Neuropsychological measurement of cognitive functions were performed at baseline and at the endpoint of treatment (22 weeks). Differences for each neuropsychological measure, were calculated, and then t-tests for small independent samples were used. Results showed statistically significant greater improvement in cognitive functioning in olanzapine treatment group compared with fluphenazine treatment group based on mean change in Wisconsin card sorting test (decrease in nonperseverative errors and increase in conceptual level responses).
