Sažetak
This paper reviews three directions of application of the lexical approach to personality, with special emphasis on research in Croatia. The lexical approach to personality, after its inception in U.S.A., became an important branch of European personality psychology in the last two decades. One direction of research within the lexical approach pertains to various national taxonomies of personality-descriptive words that developed in Europe and that have in general supported the validity of the Big-Five model. This direction of research is illustrated with the Croatian personality taxonomy, as well with the Croatian neo-taxonomy. The emic factors derived from the taxonomy of Croatian personality-descriptive adjectives provided substantial support to the generalizability of the Big-Five model, while the Croatian neo-taxonomy of social and reputational descriptors of personality yielded factors that were partly rooted in social attitudes, and partly rooted in personality proper (dispositions). The second direction of research pertains to the adjective markers derived from such taxonomies. This direction is illustrated with the application of Goldberg Big-Five markers in Croatia, where several studies also supported the generalizability of the Big-Five model. The third direction of research within the lexical approach pertains to the development of a common item format for cross-national comparisons of individual differences. It is illustrated with the application of IPIP instruments in research in Croatia. Several studies that used various forms of IPIP and various age groups of subjects provided a remarkable support for the generalizability of the Big-Five model.
