Sažetak
The aim of this study is to present neurodevelopmental outcome and neuroimaging of 39 children with congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. Among them, 15 were symptomatic at neonatal age, while remaining 24 asymptomatic infants were referred afterwards (mean 3mo) for deviant neurological signs and/or gastrointestinal problems. CMV infection was confirmed by specific serology, PCR and/or urinary viral isolation. Here we present cranial US findings, i.e CMV „ markers“ in symptomatic and asymptomatic children. Cranial MRI performed additionally showed focal or widespread brain anomalies. All children had prospective neurodevelopmental follow-up undergoing repeated audiologic investigations, ophthalmologic, neurologic and developmental assessment. Infants who have asymptomatic congenital CMV infection at birth still have considerable risk of developing neurologic abnormalities. In both symptomatic and asymptomatic infants there is a wide spectrum of brain abnormalities consequent to neurodevelopmental outcome.
