The paper focuses on the following main issues: the EU approach to cooperation and integration with central and eastern as well as south-eastern European countries; integration into the EU and integration between the countries in transition on the intra-regional bases, position of the countries which are lagging behind the other countries in terms of integration into the EU, with particular emphasis on Croatia.
