Sažetak
Croatia is a Mediterranean country with a richly indented coast and islands abounding in well-developed Mediterranean forests. Among those, mixed forests of Aleppo pine with a larger or smaller participation of holm oak (Querco ilicis-Pinetum halepensis Loisel 1971) are particularly well known. They are widely distributed across the Mediterranean, and inhabit microclimatically wetter sites within the range of a general xerothermal climate. The most important type are the forests of Aleppo pine, especially on the Adriatic islands of Hvar, Korčula, Lastovo and Mljet. Apart from representing a vegetational element, the Aleppo pine also contributes to the horticultural aspect around the houses and tourist facilities in the area. In recent years individual trees and groups of Aleppo pines have been noticed to stagnate and decline (Lukić & Kružić 1995, Vojinović 1997).
