Sažetak
The beginning of physics teaching in Rijeka reaches back to the middle of 19th century. Physics, as a separate subject, was first taught at the High Real Gymnasium in Rijeka in the school year 1853/54. The first professors of physics put together a collection of physics experiments, apparatus and textbooks which they kept expanding and upgrading. The acquisition of devices and instruments followed certain discoveries in physics, which was conditioned by the intense research of some teachers. Traces of the glorious past are also the old books for physics teaching on different languages (German, Italian, French and Croatian) witch are conserved in the library of The First Croatian High School of Sušak in Rijeka. In 1861 Croatian was introduced as a language of instruction, and the first professor which taught physics on Croatian in the Royal Great Gymnasium in Rijeka was professor Vinko Pacel. Teaching physics at university level began with the opening of the Naval Academy in Rijeka. Temporary tutoring began in the school year 1857/58 but was soon interrupted because of reforms in the educational program. The Academy’ s permanent teaching began in 1866. The professors from the Academy were the principal founders of the Natural Science Club in Rijeka (1883). Dr. Peter Salcher was a professor of physics at the Imperial Royal Naval Academy in Rijeka (k.u.k. MARINE-AKADEMIE, FIUME) from 1875 to 1909. He was also one of the most productive lecturers in the Natural Science Club in Rijeka. Until 1904 he gave 24 lectures of witch one was especially notable: on 20th February 1896 “ X Rays” . During the lecture an X ray of the hand of baroness Vranyczany was done. It was the first X ray in Croatia.
