Sažetak
This study focuses on ad hoc modifications of phraseological units (PUs) and the creative use of PUs in the English language, and tries to establish patterns and regularities of such use. The descriptions of patterns are based on examples found in the British National Corpus (BNC) and the author’ s own collection of modifi cation examples taken from various sources. As a result, we offer a new definition of a PU modification and propose a principled taxonomy of modifications of phraseological units is proposed.
