Sažetak
Psychosocial stress is hypothesized to be immunosuppressive. In breast cancer patients mastectomy is usually followed by radiotherapy (RT), causing short- and long-term alterations in host immunity. Since both surgery and RT are stressful, their possible immunosuppressive effects may be additive to well known RT-induced suppression. Supportive creative therapy could be helpful in eliminating possible immunosuppressive efects of stress. One of the problems to be solved in assessing relations between stress and immunocompetence is the selection of sutible tests for detection of possible stress-induced alteration of immunocompetence. Our pilot study included determination of number of leukocytes, the proportion and absolute number of lymphocytes and natural killer (NK) cells as well as granulocyte and monocyte phagocytosis (phagocytic activity, ingestion, microbicidity) and NK cell activity in two group of breast cancer patients at the end of RT, one of them being on supportive therapy (n=4), and the other, control one, being free of further therapy (n=82). Patients on creative therapy showed less pronounced alterations in 10 out of 12 parameters determined. Although preliminary, and done in the small patient group, the results seem to justify further investigations of immunological aspects of psychosocial events and the role of creative therapy in breast cancer patients.
