Sažetak
In less than five years of the 21st century radical changes have occurred in the relation of power between the leading economic forces. Unrivalled until recently, the power of US economy and politics is now increasingly losing its lead. Even though the USA is still the leading economic power, its strength is now being matched by three new world powers – China, India and the European Union. Only 15 years ago, the US produced one quarter of the gross product in the world economic system, whereas in the year 2006 it turned out only one fifth of the same. At the same time, Japan, through export of goods and services, had produced a bigger GDP than China, while today the situation has reversed. The European Union has become world superpower in export of goods and services, providing one third of the total world services offer, even though it has only about 5 percent of the world population. After a two-day meeting in Brussels, leading politicians harmonised their efforts towards the future development of the European Union. At this meeting it has been agreed upon that all efforts should be focused on winning the leading role in world economy. In other words, the EU-25, and especially the EU-27, following the accession of the new members (Romania and Bulgaria), should become the leading economic and political power in the world by the year 2010. The EU should become stronger than the USA in every way, and the overall liberalisation of the service sector based on the US model should definitely be abandoned. To avoid any misinterpretation of what has been agreed upon, a firm guarantee in the form of "we will become the most dynamic economy in the world by 2010" was issued to the public, particularly to the US public.
