Sažetak
In this paper has been drawn attention to some of the problems faced by research students in what are becoming increasingly hard times for them ; warned of some of the dangers ahead and suggested some possible developments which would help them. These are not however problems which students can tackle on their own ; they will need help of their supervisors and their institutions. The most immediately needed changes are likely to be a fairer wage for fair work and - in many cases - more training for that work. But in the longer run another mather is more serious: the absence of any appreciation that teaching and research are activities which are most unlikely to support each other, unless such mutual support is actively fostered during the development of young researchers. This paper has concentrated on the situation in Britain and Croatia, but the results are likely to be also extremely relevant to the corresponding situation in other countries.
