Sažetak
The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment reported that chlorophenols contributed to the total cancer risk in 2 of the approximately 550 risk assessments reporting a total cancer risk equal to or greater than 1 in 1 million. p-chlorophenol is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of higher chlorophenols, phenolic resins, organic dyes and also for extracting sulfur and nitrogen compounds from the coal Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are lately proven as successful methods for treating most of the organic compounds present in various industrial wastewaters. The reason for the use of AOPs is due to the inability of biological processes to treat highly contaminated and toxic waters that are potentially dangerous for public health and environment. In AOPs, highly reactive species hydroxyl radicals (OH∙ ) are generated in solution and generally are responsible for the oxidation and mineralization of the organic pollutants into water and carbon dioxide. In this study, photochemical advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) utilizing the combinations of UV/H2O2 and UV/Fenton processes were investigated in lab-scale experiments for the degradation of p-chlorophenol. According previous research about zeolites in combination with AOPs the impact of solid particles, zeolite NH4ZSM5 on process efficiency was also studied. High pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis was used to determine p-chlorophenol concentration reducing and the formation of primary degradation by-products such as p-benzoquinone and hydroquinone. The process efficiency has been estimated on the bases of total organic carbon (TOC) and adsorbable organic halides (AOX) measurements. The study showed that the UV/Fenton process -a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ferrous or ferric ions, was the most effective treatment process under acidic conditions and produced a higher p-chlorophenol degradation rate at a very short radiation time. The reaction was influenced by the initial pH, the input concentration of H2O2 and the amount of the iron catalyst. Finally, the highest p-chlorophenol mineralization extent was achieved by the UV/Fenton/ZSM5 process at initial pH 3 with 95.23 % TOC removal after one hour treatment.
