Sažetak
Objective. The three major causes of injury deaths for children and youth in Croatia are traffic, suicides and drowning. The great majority of suicides happened among the group 15-19 years. Material and methods. Mortality data from Croatian statistical bureau about suicides in the age group 15-19 years for the period 1986-2005 were analyzed. The rates per 100 000 population were calculated as well as the percentages of suicides performed by small arms. Results. In the whole period all together 561 persons aged 15-19 years committed suicide, out of them 224 performed it by small arms, which represent 39, 9%. The rates per 100 000 population varied from 3, 62 to 14, 34 in 1996. According to the rates the results can be divided to the three different periods: in the years 1986-1991 the rates were mainly below 10 (exception in 1987 10, 31) ; in the years 1992-1999 the rates were much higher ; in the years 2000-2005 the rates were below 9. Discussion and conclusions. During analyzed period in Croatia the war occured following the splitting apart of former Yugoslavia. The increase of suicide rates is connected with the beginning of the war. This fact is in the opposition of the explanation that during the war and any other increase of homicides that the rates of suicides decrease. The rates of suicides remained higher then before war even several years after the war. The horrific war situation with much higher accessibility of small arms influenced the young persons to fatal decision of quitting their lives at the age when they should start to live. Croatian Government put a lot of efforts to decrease the number of circulating small arms in the population.
