Sažetak
Honeybee parasite Varroa destructor is present in Croatia for almost thirty years. In varroa control different drugs and procedures were used. Parasites became resistant to used contact as well as systemic drugs. Resistance resultet in doses increase of applied drugs. Presence of the parasite, as well as used drugs, increase sensitivity of honeybee colony to other deseases which normaly do not cause high damage. For breeding varroa tolerant bees it is important to use drone population developed in contact with varroa. One of the goals of the research started in 1999. at island of Unije was to recognize existing differences between selected lines, i.e. to confirm which selection path on tolerance more successful. Second part of the experiment is oriented in use of obtained results. From 2003 on Unije island each year minimally 60 queens are produced and mated. These queens are tested in filed condition in Germany, Austria and Croatia on tolerability traits, as well as on other economically important traits. Queen breeders can use advantage of mating station at Unije and include in to their selections already reached varroa tolerance, as well as other traits from drone lines. Use of lines with higher varroa tolerance can contribute to more efficient beekeeping with less drugs and improved quality of bee products.
