Sažetak
Forty war traumatized refugee families from Bosnia and Herzegovina who found accommodation in a camp for displaced persons and refugees in Zagreb were followed up. On providing psychological help in camp, the authors used the methods of psychodynamic clinical observation and analysis of the dynamics and structure of refugee families. As family therapists, they focused on disturbances of the whole family system and followed up changes in the family structure and roles of particular family members. Under the influence of multiple traumatic experiences, along with the difficulties of refugee life the families undergo prolonged suffering, which resumes previous conflicts within the family, and strengthens the symbiotic and dependence needs and aggressive defense. The authors provided help in overcoming resistance to the process of mourning, considering it a family process. Four groups of families were observed and singled out: 1. functional families, 2. families undergoing temporary crises, overcoming them successfully with time and professional help, 3. dysfunctional families adopting psychopathologic states/symptoms of one or more family members ; and 4. alienated and disintegrated families.
