Sažetak
The impact of these events can be studied from various aspects (cultural, political, ecological, psychological, etc.) and over various time periods. The benefits of these events must be confronted with the costs, or a cost/benefit analysis must be made. For us the most interesting was the impact of large sporting events on tourism. It appears throughout all three periods. The organising of an event influences the creation of an image of the city and its positioning in the world. It is, however, most emphasised after the event because the city is left with all the renewed or newly built facilities that can be used for the further development of sport, tourism and other activities. Namely, the impact cannot be measured solely by the number of spectators at the matches, but according to the promotion and creation of the new sporting and tourism image of the city. This will attract potential tourists and influence their choice of destination to visit. In this sense, it is estimated that Athens could, on the bases of the Olympic Games’ influence, expect an additional 450 thousand tourists per year until 2011. Not only do the Olympic Games have a great impact but other sporting events, such as numerous world and European championships (for example the World Cup Football, Formula 1, etc.). The World Cup in Korea and Japan in 2002 was perhaps not the most visited one, but 41100 programme hours with a cumulative audience number achieved around 34 billion viewers (“ viewing times” ). All this in spite of the time zone difference and therefore represents a record for a single sporting event. Its impact on tourism remains yet to be seen.
