Unlike the lower and uppermost stages of the Lower Cretaceous, which are characterized by individual taxa or more or less distinct assemblages, Middle Aptian deposits are characterized by the absence of significant index forms. Consequently, separation of the Lower and Upper Aptian in Biokovo and the wider Dinaride area is based on an absence of P. lenticularis and the abundant occurrence of Salpingoporella dinarica RADOIČIĆ
