Sažetak
The delta of the Neretva river, on the west Adriatic coast, is a unique swamp region that has undergone large changes in few last decades. Great areas of swamp ewre modified by melioration into agricultural land, and the large scale production of different citrus fruits and vegetables. About 1624 ha (5.8%) of land in this region is protected by law; four ornithological and ichthyo-ornitological wildlife refuges, one important landscape, and one forest park. We were interested in the influence of the past environmental changes on the ground beetle fauna. In the 19th and in the beginning of the 20th century the ground beetle fauna of these areas were investigated and 86 endemic species were identified. Some of them are endemic (e.g. Carabus coriaceus v. dalmaticus, Laemostenus dalmatinus), and some are rare species found just in these areas of Croatia (e.g. Bembidion fumigatum, Anthracus flavipennis, Pterostichus inquinatus, Lebia lepida etc). During 1994, 1995 and 1996 the ground beetles fauna was collected with pitfall traps and by hand in different kind of stands. About 1000 specimens from 57 species were found. The majority of species have small populations. Low diversity in the ground beetle fauna was found in the area of reed patches and agrobiocenosis, but the dominant, herbivorous species (Harpalu rufipes) typical for agricultural stands was aboundant. Other stands out of that zone were more diverse, with small popultions of mostly carnivorous, endemic, Mediterranean and rare species. Rare species indentified in this area before this investigation were not found. Changes were caused primarily by habitat loos, and with the developing of agriculture. Further entomological investigations of this area are necessary because they can show the posibility of conservation and improvement of the delta.
