Sažetak
RLS is most pronounced in the evening and night. The prevalence of RLS has been reported to be as high as 5% in general population and it accounts for about 11% of all sleep disorders. There are several clinical reports of the positive response of RLS to levodopa with a dopa-secarbixylase inhibitor. However , standard levodopa preparations often do not maintain therapeutic coverage through the night. Thus, we initiated an open trial with sustained release benzerazide/levodopa in patients with idiopathic RLS. The 12 patients (F/M =6/6, age ed 31-76 years) werw included in the study. They all suffered (2-13 years) from idiopathic RLS, according to clinical and polysomnographic criteria. Increased sleep latency was present in 10 patients and the nocturnal awakenings in all patients. After an initial evaluation all subject were placed on 1-2 capsules of sustained release benzerazide/levodopa at night. All medicated subjects were followed up for at least 3 months. All except one patient showed positive response to preparation. According to self rating, sleep latency improved in 10 patients and nocturnal awakening decreased in all. Our preliminary study showerd that sustained release levodopa could be effective in idiopathic RLS for relief of symptoms and improvement in objective sleep parameters.
