Aim: To examine the prevalence of pruritus according to sex, age of onset, smoking habits and alcohol consumption in hospitalized pateints with psoriasis. Methods: Clinical data of 241 psoriatic patients hospitalized at Department of Dermatovenerology, during a 10 year period (1996-2005), were collected and analyzed. Results: The mean age of examined psoriatic patients was 37.10± ; 17.84 years (37.19± ; 17.21 male, 36.94± ; 18.99 female). In this population 38.59% patients had pruritus (35.07% male, 44.83% female). In patients with the onset of psoriasis under the age of 40 years, pruritus was present in 37.85% (35.63% male, 41.51% female), while in those with onset after the age of 40 years pruritus was present in 39.60% (34.33% male, 50.00% female). Pruritus was present in 43.36% of smokers and 34.38% in non-smokers. Alcohol consumtion was registred in 30.11% patients with pruritus and in 34.46% without pruritus. No statistical difference was found for any of the analyzed parameters. Conclusion: Pruritus is a common symptom in psoriasis, but age, sex, smoking habits and alcohol consumption have no influence on the pruritus presence.
