Sažetak
In this study, difference between the diameter of a sick and healthy nerve in acute retrobulbar neuritis measured by ultrasonography was compared with changes in the brain measured by magnetic resonance imaging in multiple sclerosis. Twenty patients with clinically defined multiple sclerosis with acute retrobulbar neuritis were included in the study. Orbital pain was present in 55% of patientes. visual acuity was considerably reduced in all patients: 0.01-0.09 in 20%, 0.01-0.03 in 30%, 0.6-0.8 in 30% light perception in 20% of patients. The test of color perception was positive in 50& of patients. Fundoscopy findings showed significant changes. The arithmetic mean of dimeter of optic nerve with retrobulbar neuritis was 4.2 mm, whereas arithmetic mean of the diameter of a healthy nerve was 3.6 mm, yielding a diameter difference of 0.6 mm. A diameter change greater than o.3 mm between the two optic nerves was significant. The correlation of the optic nerve diameter in acute retrobulbar neuritis measured by ultrasonography with the changes recorded by brain magnetic resonance imaging in multiple sclerosis showed a clear increase in the optic nerve diameter with the increase in the number and size of lesions, as indicated by the arithmetic mean. The correlation of optic nerve changes with acute retrobulbar neuritis and number of brain lesions in multiple sclerosis as well as of the healthy nerve diameter with the number of brain lesions were statistically significant.
