Sažetak
The thesis explores why picture books get awarded. It depicts how the picture book was first created, and how it developed from a highly moral and didactic literature to become a modern piece of art. Several awarded picture books are analyzed, and found interesting and diverse. The characteristics of modern picture books are discussed, a couple of the Kate Grenaway Medal and the Caldecott Medal winners being presented more extensively. A separate chapter is devoted to using picture books in the classroom. In conclusion it has been stated that the most common features of awared picture books are originality and creativity ; otherwise, they show a huge diversity.
