Sažetak
After the extensive research done in the past decades it has now become a scientific fact that there is an increase in CO2 concentration of the atmosphere from 180ppm 17, 000 years ago to 300ppm in 1850 and 380 in 2000. Although there are obvious variations proven in the Earth's history that have natural causes, the question remains how much of this increase is due to anthropogenic influence in the past 150 years. Since CO2 concentration is directly related to the greenhouse effect and mankind is still technologically not capable of satisfying energy needs without making use of fossil fuels, the "bridging technology" is found in the CCS concept – Carbon Capture and Storage systems to enable the power production increase and at the same time a reduction of CO2 emissions worldwide. The geological storage possibilities come in as a viable option to use the pore space in deep subsurface formations for permanent storage of CO2 separated from flue gases of large emitters – "point sources". The most perspective types of such objects – "sinks" are the deep regional aquifers, depleted hydrocarbon fields and deep coal seams. According to the results of a preliminary study done in the EU FP6 project CASTOR (WP 1.2) there is a significant potential in Croatia regarding the first two types of sinks.
