Sažetak
Concerning that social work profession primarily or indirectly deals with poverty, i.e. people whose minimal existential needs are not met, it seems relevant to research the factors contributing to finding oneself in such position. Thereby, it is essential to study the objective causes of poverty, already researched in numerous studies, but also the public perception of poverty and to what people attribute being poor. Feagin (1972.) was the first who studied the ambiguity of poverty perceptions for different social groups. He developed a list of eleven belief types about the causes of poverty and grouped them into three categories. First category included individual or internal causes, explaining poverty in terms of poor people lifestyle, such as lack of ability or effort, laziness and alcoholism. Second category consisted of social or external causes, often called the structural causes. This implied attributing poverty to unfavorable social, political, cultural and economic factors, such as unequal wealth distribution, impoverished exploitation, lack of education, low income and lack of social opportunities. Third category was called fatalism, and included reasons such as bad luck, illness, destiny, God’ s will etc.. The first belief type was based on the presumption that poor people themselves were responsible for their situation, while the other two considered that unequal conditions, caused by external factors out of people’ s control, were to blame. Since Feagin until today, numerous research studies on poverty attribution have been conducted, but none of them in Croatia. The results of this study, conducted on students of social work and other students (economics, agriculture, etc.) indicate the differences in poverty attribution in different student groups, with an emphasis on social sensibility. Namely, together with poverty attribution, social sensibility was explored by a set of predominantly humanistic values, which are central in social work profession.
