Sažetak
Objectives Increasing age is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but the mechanisms of risk are still not well understood. Rising levels of inflammatory markers might be responsible for the excess in thrombotic events that develops with aging. Patient! ; anil Methods I'atients (pts) with acute coronary syndromes (ACS), 62% males: 1553 with ST-elevation myocardial infarction, 397 with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction, 912 with unstable angina, were included in the study. Fibrinogen, determined using the Clauss assay, and C-reactive protein (CRP), determined by immunot'irbidimetric method, were obtained at the time of admission. Patients were divided into four groups: A < 55 years of age (592 pts), 15 55-65 years (706 pts), C 65-75 years (930 pts), ' I) > 75 years (634 pts). Results Significant difference (p < 0.01) was obtained between groups for both fibrinogen and CRP which persisted after adjusting for sex, cardiovascular risk factors (diabetes, smoking, hypertension, hyperlipi-demia) and type of ACS. Post hoc analysis revealed statistically significant difference between groups A and C, A and D, B and C, B and D for both fibrioogen and CRP (the mean fibrinogen levels were: 4.19: 4.39 ; 4.76 ; 4.78g/L and mean CRP levels were: 17.0 ; 23.6 ; 33.7 ; 38.9mg/L for groups A-D respectively). Both fibrinogen and CRP correlated significantly with advancing age (r = 0.18 for both fibrinogen and CRP, p< 0.001).' Conclusion These results may partly explain the elevated incidence and more common complications of cardiovascular disease in the elderly.
