Sažetak
In the 1950s socialist Yugoslavia started to produce cars, which were at that time still considered to be a luxury. The real consumer frenzy occurred in the sixties, the decade of the fastest technological modernization of households and everyday life. Statistically speaking, 342 Yugoslav citizens had to share one car in 1960, while ten years later the number dropped to 49. The car ownership continued to increase in the seventies and eighties. The newspapers and popular magazines wrote a lot about cars, motorization and construction of new roads, but also discussed on cars and luxury. The printed media were also an excellent place for the promotion of new car models, no matter if they were imported from the west or produced in the country. Moreover, the advertisements promoted new methods of payment and new lifestyles. The car acquired the meaning of a status symbol, it made the owner proud and was considered to be almost like a family member. Having a car gave new meanings to leisure: taking care of a car definitely took time, but on the other hand the car enabled families to be independent from public transport, to organize private family outings and holidays, often taking routes or going to destinations suggested by specialized weekly magazines. The paper will try to answer the following questions: how did car ownership spread during the socialist period ; what were the differences between the six Yugoslav republics ; which models were available on the market, on what price and how affordable they were ; how did cars change the practices of everyday life and leisure patterns.
