Sažetak
Compensatory growth of the gland remaining after unilateral adrenalectomy is influenced by a neural reflex invoving beta-adrenoceptors *Abs Soc Neurosci 1996;1592*. To identify the receptor subtype(s) involved, unilateraly adrenalectomized rats were treated with guanethidine and/pr beta-adrenergic agents. Wet weights, protein, RNA and DNA contents were determined as adrenal growth indicators. As measured 10 days following the operation, both atenolol (beta1-antagonist) and butoxamine (beta2-antagonist) dose-dependently inhibited compensatory growth. The inhibitory effect of sympathectomy (guanethidine) was abolished by isoproterenol (nonselective beta-agonist) or by salbutamol (beta2-agonist). A significant growth was observed as early as on day 2 after the operation, but the effects of guanethidine and beta-antagonists were obvious from day 4 onward. The results suggest that the adrenergic stimulation of compensatory adrenal growth invoves both beta1 and beta2-receptors. It seems that the adrenergic influence becomes of importance at later stages of the process.
