Sažetak
The relationship between bishops and city authorities in Dubrovnik of the Middle Ages gets characteristics that stem from its particular political and social system. They range from the leading position in the city government during the early Middle Ages, through the loss of many powers in the communal period, to the almost total expropriation in the 15th and 16th century. That caused bitter conflicts between the Government of the Republic, church hierarchy in Dubrovnik and the pontificate, especially after the Trident Council. Power-holders of Dubrovnik found the solution to the problem in subjugating the Church to the pragmatic needs of the secular authorities. Secularization was indeed present in Dubrovnik as early as Middle Ages, and it was manifested in the changes of the archbishop’ s position from a spiritual and actual leader of the city to a respectable figure that was not able to practice its nominal authority.
