Sažetak
The sun, sand and sea concept of tourism of the Republic of Croatia has been cudgelled by tourism researches as grossly outdated as it does not mediate the post-modern trend of consumer differentiation: go global – nurture local. This paper researches the possibility of recreating the journeys of British travellers who on their way to Levant in the 16th and 17th centuries travelled along Adriatic coast and visited the coastal ports and many off-lying islands, as a tourism product. The project's obvious commercial potential is emphasised, but above all, the important social profitability it offers. The ways of life of many of Croatia's islands are disappearing. Without rural revival, ideally through sustainable tourism, most of the islands will soon become depopulated and desolate. A revival program to be co-ordinated by the Croatian Fund for Sustainable Economic Development has been planned. The project is consistent with European developments in sustainable tourism and community protection. The paper underpins authors’ specific approach towards sustainable rural development through tourism: namely, the emphasis of finding an emotional link with which tourism can be linked to rural areas. A similar approach, authors suggest, could be used for other Eastern and Middle European countries which are also dependent on tourism development for their future prosperity.
