Sažetak
Maize inbred lines, essential for producing commercial hybrid seed, are vulnerable to nutrient deficiencies and imbalances, particularly on acid soils where insufficient levels of plant-available phosphorus (P) exist. There is a need therefore to identify and develop maize inbred genotypes with a high P- utilisation capacity. The objective of this study was to assess the genotypic variation among maize inbred lines for responsiveness to P fertilizers (grain yield and P accumulation) on soils differing in acidity. Seven maize genotypes (elite inbred lines) were tested covering a range of genetic diversity representative of the U.S. Corn-Belt dent germplasm. They were grown for three years at two locations in Eastern Croatia on soils differing in pH by 1.6 units (water or 1 M KCl pH). Phosphorus amendments were applied in the first year of investigation: (i) control (0 P) and (ii) 380 kg P ha-1. The year × P fertilization interaction was highly significant for grain yield on both locations as well as for ear-leaf P concentration on acid soil, whereas the year × genotype interaction was significant for grain yield on both soils. Genotypic responsiveness to high P fertilization rates was in general greater on non-acid than on acid soil due to limitations imposed by acid stress. However, the line A672 had the same yield responsiveness to high P fertilization rates irrespective of soil acidity. The inbred Os84-44 had consistently the highest grain yield regardless of P fertilization rate and soil pH. Therefore, there is variation among maize inbred lines for responsiveness to high P fertilization rates on soils of different acidity. This variation may be due to differential tolerance to soil acidity and/or the interaction between acid soil tolerance and a response to P fertilization.
