Sažetak
While the experience of cruising appeals to many, probably still spurred by the image of opulence, luxury and high-class living projected by the early cruise-liners, the possibilities of playing host to these ships is equally appealing to destination policy makers, while the resident population is left to cope with an array of impacts caused by the sudden flood of visitors. Nowhere is this more visible than in small, tightly built Mediterranean destinations, characterized by the old, medieval and, at times walled cities. While in the existing academic literature a lot of attention is paid to the socio-cultural impact of tourism upon local residents, there is paucity of studies dealing with residents' reactions to cruise passengers. By building on the insights derived from the literature on socio-cultural impacts of tourism, the aim of this study is to broaden our knowledge and understanding of the cruise industry's social impact on the local population as well as on-ground tourists. The premise is that pressures created on city infrastructure would adversely affect the quality of life of the former, and holiday enjoyment of the latter group. In order to fulfil the paper's objectives two studies were carried out: a) a study of on-ground tourists' reactions to cruisers and cruise ship passengers, and b) of residents' reactions to tourism in general and cruisers in particular. Contrary to expectations, the cruisers turned out to be welcomed by both on-ground tourists and residents. It appears that residents and other vacationers admire these shiny white, larger-than-life floating towns, even if they are of the opinion that cruisers bring in little in the way of economic benefits.
