Sažetak
ATM technology is the only broadband technology that can facilitate end-to-end transparent service. Using this technology in the ship backbone, terrestrial and satellite networks, global seamless interconnection with bandwidth-on-demand and multimedia capabilities will be provided. However, some problems (mainly due to space environment impairments and long propagation delay) impose special constraints on ATM protocol and multimedia services. This paper analyzes these constraints and their effects on satellite network performance and the latest technologies involved into the satellite projects. It also covers the comparative analysis of two high-speed technologies - Gigabit Ethernet and ATM. The ATM technology for backbone network on the ships of Croatian Merchant Navy is proposed.
