Sažetak
The wireless access to the Internet which is used today is slow and second-generation wireless systems are inefficient at handling high data rate traffic, in particular IP traffic. Hence, mobile network operators will soon have to choose their migration paths towards the third-generation wideband systems. In this paper the choice of an appropriate migration path for the wireless technology towards European Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) is presented, as well as requirements applying to this system. The paper describes several options of evaluation paths, all of which support a seamless transition from present digital wireless network, GSM to UMTS. It also highlights the evolution of the existing air-interface standards.
