Sažetak
Reading is not just getting information from the written text. It affects the individuality improves and forms the personality of an individual. Reading is also a part of mission of every library and all types of libraries. Regarding the purpose of reading (reading for pleasure and functional reading) there are also different degrees of personal involvement in this process, engagement of the imagination, feelings, thinking, judgement etc. of an individual. Best way to learn to become literate is not to be told the importance of reading but to enjoy reading itself. It makes reading for pleasure, promoted and stimulated by all types of libraries, a strength in personal, community and society development. Developing interests to read among children and youth in public and school libraries is the strategic issue of how to respond to the needs of those who are readers but also to the needs of non-readers, those who cannot read and those who do not want to read. Many authors emphasise the correlation between reading for pleasure and success at school which emphasise the role of not only children’ s library but school library too in promoting reading for pleasure. Libraries must continuously conduct some measures that would ensure reader’ s development and education from the earliest age, thus turning reading for pleasure into a vital habit of today’ s children and youth. There are various measures, from advisory work, providing an appropriate collections and developing programmes and campaigns to co-operation of all revelant institutions within a community. A society has to invest in children because « ; ; ; children are a worthwile investment» ; ; ; and have every right to be so. In an equivalent way, this society has to invest in librarians so that they would develop professional competences which will enable them to advocate for children and to overcome the existing problems in the current librarianship: inability of physical access, lack of motivation for access and unlimited access. Librarians' competences, their willingness to learn and professional commitment are essential not only for the mission of today's librarianship, but also for the vision of its future development. International guidelines for the development and the best practices of the children's librarianship in the whole world enable them in getting new ideas, but also make possible objective evaluations of the services they already provide for their young patrons.
