Sažetak
The extent of linguistic differentiation in 45 villages of the region of Middle Dalmatia, Croatia has been examined within a multidisciplinary anthropological study. Through analyses of the basic vocabulary the characteristics of the contemporary Croatian Dialects spoken in this region are established, and “ linguistic distances” among the rural subpopulations are estimated. Using factor analysis those linguistic elements are identified which contribute to interpopulational heterogeneity, while the connection between these findings and known population migration in the history of the region is discussed.
